Media reports have speculated that Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and veteran politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, both from UMNO, are in consideration for the leadership.
Muhyiddin's resignation could return the premiership to the United Malays National Organisation UMNO , Malaysia's 'grand old party.
The king had accepted his resignation and said a new election was not the best option during a pandemic.
Muhyiddin Yassin has claimed that several MPs who decided to pull their support from his coalition- including scandal-plagued ex-leader Najib Razak-had been angered that the Prime Minister refused to get the corruption cases dropped against them.
His resignation brings to an end a tumultuous 17 months in office.
